Transforming dielectrics with ultrafast laser pulses

Abstract:
When a femtosecond laser pulse is tightly focused on the surface or  within the bulk of a dielectric material, it triggers non-linear  absorption processes that can permanently modify the substrate. These  modifications can take various forms, ranging from precise material  ablation to the rearrangement of the molecular structure, and can be  exploited to create complex, functional devices directly inside the  material. In this seminar, I will introduce the fundamental physics  driving this advanced manufacturing process and highlight some examples  of its practical applications.
